Greek Media and TV reporting loss of Mirage 2000 today
Greek air force jet crashes on training flight; no injuries
A Greek fighter jet crashed near Athens during a training flight on
Tuesday, authorities said. The pilot ejected safely.
The French-made Mirage 2000 jet crashed shortly after taking off from
the Tanagra air force base, about 70 kilometers (45 miles) northwest
of Athens.
The pilot reported engine trouble before ejecting, state-run NET
television said.
The air force carries out frequent flights over the Aegean Sea, where
boundaries are disputed with neighbor Turkey. Last year, two Greek
pilots were killed in four accidents, including a training flight
crash and a mid-air collision with a Turkish fighter. The Turkish
pilot in that incident escaped unharmed.
